Sometimes, the beginning of success can start with a simple invitation.

“Jans – Bunyavee Plaimongkol,” a second-year student in the Digital Media Faculty, majoring in Graphic Design, at Sripatum University, decided to “try submitting her first entry to a competition,” which became a crucial step leading to her winning first prize.

The logo and label design for the liquor bottle titled “Secrets from the Backyard…to Himmapan Literature” won first prize at the Merai COMPETITION 2025 – Logo & Label Design competition.

It all started with an invitation from my professor?

It all started with an invitation from Professor Komm Panthakan Nimmanhemin in the SPU Graphic Design Club. He encouraged interested students to submit their work for a competition. At the time, it was my first competition, and I was only in my second year with limited branding experience. Fortunately, several professors provided guidance and helped me refine my work, allowing me to advance to the finals and ultimately win first prize. It was my first ever competition win, and I felt incredibly proud.

Inspired by "secret gardens" in literature?

This design is inspired by the classic novel The Secret Garden. The main concept is to connect with the brand’s story, which began with secretly brewing liquor in a backyard and in the woods. Therefore, the design incorporates a blue circle surrounding the “Secret Garden,” representing a viewpoint looking down into the brand’s unique and intriguing fermentation tanks.

What are the challenges in designing a logo for a real product?

A key challenge is designing packaging for alcoholic beverages, which have relatively strict legal requirements. For example, images that directly promote drinking are prohibited, alcohol content must be clearly stated, and warning labels with text larger than 3 mm must be displayed. Therefore, the design must be aesthetically pleasing and attractive while simultaneously complying with these requirements.

A classroom that transforms ideas into skills?

Studying graphic design helped develop skills in branding and design thinking, especially writing design briefs, which helped me understand the brand’s direction and design work that communicates the goal more effectively. My favorite subject was Composition. Although it’s known to be “difficult,” it was the subject that helped me the most in improving my skills in composition and color usage.

A reward more than a trophy?

Beyond the awards, the most important thing was seeing the work of competitors from many universities. It allowed me to learn new perspectives and gained inspiration to further develop my own skills.
