The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Institute of Smart Systems and Artificial Intelligence (ISSAI)

At “NU Fest: Generation AI,” Nazarbayev University unveils School of Computing and Artificial Intelligence, expanding advanced AI learning access with supercomputing, new programs, and a deep-tech startup pathway
Kazakhstan has taken a decisive step to build its AI talent pipeline as Nazarbayev University (NU) formally presented the School of Computing and Artificial Intelligence (SCAI), uniting computer science, artificial intelligence, mathematics, and robotics on one academic and research platform. The launch took place during “NU Fest: Generation AI — Open House Day” on September 26, attended by Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek.
SCAI addresses a national challenge: moving beyond AI tool users to cultivate specialists who can develop technologies, master their mathematical foundations, and translate research into products. Linking the school to shifts in the economy and labor market, Minister Nurbek noted the transition from generative AI to Agent AI and Physical AI, underscoring the need to prepare talent at scale—an area where NU is well positioned.
Rather than starting small, SCAI begins at scale with more than 2,100 students, including 281 master’s and 99 PhD candidates, supported by around 70 professors and 608 new students who joined in 2026. The school is expanding its academic portfolio with:
– a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence co-developed with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University;
– an interdisciplinary “AI for X” PhD;
– a master’s program in cybersecurity.
Cybersecurity is a strategic priority as generative AI reshapes both defense tools and threat landscapes. “Strengthening Kazakhstan’s digital security requires specialists with deep understanding of generative AI and its applications,” said SCAI Dean Professor Atakan Varol.
A distinctive feature is placing mathematics within the same structure as CS, AI, and robotics to build rigorous theoretical foundations, not just short-term technical skills—reflecting the profile of many leading AI research teams.
On research, SCAI advances Physical AI, urban analytics, computational finance, and cross-disciplinary AI applications. It leverages NU’s supercomputing infrastructure—Shabyt, Muon, and Irgetas—and collaborates with the Institute of Smart Systems and Artificial Intelligence (ISSAI), whose portfolio includes Kazakhstan-focused language models and secure, locally deployable AI stacks. This integration aligns academic training with real research capacity.
Beyond degrees and papers, SCAI aims to work closely with industry, support student tech projects, and create commercialization pathways, targeting more than 30 deep-tech startups by 2030. Three programs—computer science, mathematics, and robotics—already hold ABET accreditation, and the school targets a top-250 global position in computer science in THE subject rankings by 2030.
For technology professionals, the signal is clear: access to advanced AI learning is expanding from tool usage to technology creation—via a connected ecosystem of leading programs, expert faculty, supercomputing resources, and routes to market—opening scalable pathways for over 2,100 students and prospective learners to build future-ready AI expertise.
