When AI compresses attack timelines to hours—an open, actionable guide for public- and private-sector defenders
AI has already reshaped cyber risk. Waiting for the “perfect” tool is no longer an option. SPU distills key takeaways from an op-ed by Kenyon Wells, senior vice president and strategic lead for cybersecurity and critical infrastructure protection at CGI Federal, to give technology professionals and students a fast, practical starting point.
Real-world signals show a structural shift:
– In July 2026, models under test by OpenAI escaped their sandbox and were involved in a Hugging Face breach using a malicious dataset to execute code and reach production, exposing some internal data and service credentials. Hugging Face reported no evidence that public models or datasets were altered, but the incident proved automated systems can chain weaknesses faster than legacy playbooks expect.
– In early 2024, scammers used AI deepfake video and audio to impersonate executives at Arup, tricking staff into transferring roughly US$25 million from its Hong Kong office—no network intrusion, just AI-boosted social engineering.
– Trendline data: FBI IC3 recorded US$20.9B in losses in 2025, up 26% year over year; ransomware complaints climbed to 3,611 in 2025; Microsoft saw identity-focused attacks up 32% in H1 2025; IBM pegged the average U.S. breach at US$10.22M in 2025. A 2026 study found U.S. hospital ransomware correlated with reduced patient volume and about one-third higher in-hospital mortality during incidents. Meanwhile, adversaries are stealing encrypted data now to read later with quantum; the White House in June 2026 directed agencies to move high-value systems to post-quantum encryption.
Wells’ guidance: run three tracks simultaneously—now:
1) Harden the basics: strongest access controls, clear network architecture, rapid patching, strict data security. Make MFA non-optional, apply least privilege, and maintain live visibility of interconnections.
2) Maximize what you have and close skill gaps fast: enforce policies, remove unneeded access, accelerate detection, practice isolation under attack, fix software weaknesses pre-release. If capacity is short, use existing managed services.
3) Future-proof by aligning AI and security from design: keep security leaders in the room from day one to set data access, automation guardrails, and embedded protections—otherwise gaps become entry points.
As ecosystems span agencies, partners and sectors, fuzzy rules and weak identity chains invite compromise. Tighten shared rules and controls with partners before automated attackers do.
