From Earthquake Early Warnings to Community Voices: Sripatum University Students Earn National Recognition for Creative Ideas Connecting Technology, Public Safety, and Sustainable Cities

Sripatum University (SPU) celebrates the achievements of two students from Computer Engineering and Information and Communication Technology who received prestigious awards in the Vibe Check: SDGs initiative, themed “Innovation: Driving the World Forward,” organized by UN Global Compact Network Thailand.

The initiative provided a platform for young innovators to communicate creative solutions and explore how technology and new perspectives can address pressing societal challenges.

Jirasudanee Akkarasinthirawut, a Computer Engineering student, received the Insightful Knowledge Award (Article)for “Know Earlier, Stay Safer: The Precious Seconds QuakeLink Wants to Give Everyone.” The article highlights the importance of earthquake early-warning concepts, emphasizing how timely information can help individuals prepare for emergencies and potentially reduce disaster-related risks.

Meanwhile, Yanapat Saritsadikun, an Information and Communication Technology student, earned the Creativity Award (Article) for “The Broken Alley and the City That Listens.” The article explores everyday urban infrastructure challenges and the importance of listening to community voices when envisioning safer, more responsive cities.

These achievements demonstrate the students’ ability to connect technological knowledge, critical thinking, and creative communication with real-world social issues.

Their work is thematically connected to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, particularly the importance of resilient communities and responsive urban environments, as well as SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through participation in an initiative organized by an external sustainability network.

From the perspective of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings framework, the activity also relates to SDG 17.4: Education for the SDGs, particularly Indicator 17.4.1: Commitment to Meaningful Education for Sustainable Development. The awards provide examples of student learning outcomes, although additional institutional evidence would be needed to establish university-wide curriculum integration.

Beyond the recognition, these awards highlight an important message: meaningful innovation begins with understanding people’s needs. By transforming everyday challenges into creative ideas, SPU students demonstrate how the next generation can contribute to safer, more inclusive, and more sustainable communities.
