SPU Shares the “Power to Live,” Inspiring Young People to Listen, Understand, and Support One Another

Sripatum University’s (SPU) Wellness Counseling Center under Student Affairs, together with students from the Love Your Life Club, participated in Power to Live for World Suicide Prevention Day 2025 on 5 September 2025 at Samyan Mitrtown. The event aimed to strengthen hope, happiness, self-worth, mutual support, and practical awareness of depression and suicide prevention.
The event brought together the Thai Suicide Prevention Association, Department of Mental Health, Psychiatric Association of Thailand, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Samaritans of Thailand, suicide-prevention networks, and other partners. This multi-sector collaboration demonstrated how universities, public agencies, professional organizations, businesses, and civic networks can collectively strengthen mental health support for young people.
Students learned through discussions covering the suicide situation, AI and mental health, empowerment through lived experiences, communication among first-jobbers, and happiness in university life. Music performances also provided a positive space for relaxation and emotional connection.
The urgency of this work was highlighted by Department of Mental Health statistics presented at the event: in 2024, Thailand recorded 5,126 suicide deaths, equivalent to 7.89 per 100,000 population. The 15–19 age group recorded a suicide-attempt rate of 136.4 per 100,000. These figures reinforce why listening, recognizing warning signs, reducing stigma, and knowing where to seek professional help are essential skills for students and their communities.
The event also introduced technology supporting access to mental health services, including DMIND, an AI-based depression screening application. According to information presented at the event, DMIND provides 85% accuracy, is available free of charge, has been used more than 500,000 times, and has been integrated into Thailand’s Mental Health Hotline 1323.
SPU’s participation directly reflects SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, particularly 3.3 Collaborations and health services and 3.3.5 Mental health support for students, emphasizing active mental health promotion, counseling access, and support networks. It also connects with SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, particularly 17.2 Relationships to support the goals and 17.2.2 Cross sectoral dialogue about SDGs, through collaboration among universities, government agencies, professional bodies, businesses, and social networks within the THE Impact Rankings framework.
For SPU, supporting students goes beyond learning in the classroom. It means creating an environment where young people know that someone is ready to listen, where students gain the awareness to support friends facing emotional difficulties, and where professional support is within reach when a crisis occurs. A moment of listening, understanding, and reaching out may become someone’s most meaningful Power to Live.
