Opening the Door to University: SPU Targets Admission of Students from the Bottom 20% of Household Income

Through the government Student Loan Fund, university scholarships and trusted partners, Sripatum University helps young people from the lowest-income households in Thailand begin their studies with confidence.

Student Loan Fund representatives meet the SPU Scholarship Office around the table

Krungthai Bank on-campus account opening for new Student Loan Fund borrowers, 15 to 16 June 2026For many families, the cost of the first semester is the biggest question when a child dreams of going to university. Sripatum University (SPU) wants that question to have a clear answer. The university has a target to admit and support students who fall into the bottom 20% of household income in the country: at least a quarter of its students, including each new intake, should be able to access the government Student Loan Fund (SLF) or SPU’s own scholarships, and every eligible applicant who seeks help should receive it. SLF means-testing identifies students from low-income households and gives priority to State Welfare Card holders, a more tightly defined group, so support reaches the poorest families first. For students facing the greatest hardship, including those in the care of the Rajaprajanugroh Foundation under Royal Patronage and Southern Border Provinces scholars, SPU covers tuition for the whole degree. The Scholarship Office leads this work, guided by SPU’s equality policy, which welcomes every applicant without regard to personal status.

Information comes first. Admission pages show which programmes are eligible for SLF loans and introduce SPU’s scholarships before students apply, and faculties open their own scholarship rounds, such as the College of Logistics and Supply Chain’s interviews in July 2026. Partners then help smooth the way:

  • In September 2025, an SLF delegation visited the Scholarship Office to listen to students and simplify document checks for faster approvals.
  • On 15–16 June 2026, Krungthai Bank opened a service point on campus so new borrowers could set up the account that receives their loan and living allowance.
  • In March 2026, SPU invited current borrowers to repay during their studies, counted as volunteer hours, so the fund can keep supporting the next generation.

Students can also earn while they learn:

  • At the Department of Employment’s Learn to Earn forum in August 2025, SPU students shared how paid work helped their families.
  • In September 2025, the School of Business Administration launched BUSWORK to connect students with real paid jobs.
  • In June 2026, the DEK THAI CATH-Club offered paid service roles at international events.

At SPU, every capable young person deserves a fair chance at university.

Together, these steps ease financial worries at the moment they matter most. Students from low-income homes learn about their options early, have their support in place before term begins, and can build income and skills during their degree, a hopeful route out of poverty through education. The work reflects SPU’s Excellence Development Plan 2026–2030 (Alpha Ready Roadmap). Looking ahead, SPU will share guidance on loans and scholarships more widely with applicants from low-income communities.

By setting a clear target for students from the bottom 20% of household income and working hand in hand with the Student Loan Fund, partners and employers, SPU keeps its doors open to students who need support the most.
