From Local Councils to the UN: SPU Works with Government to Plan for Climate Disasters

Flood response in the south, earthquake-safe buildings in the north and early-warning innovation on regional stages: Sripatum University is building disaster resilience at every level.

SPU staff and students with flood relief supplies for the Prince of Songkla University shelter

Climate change is making floods, storms and other hazards more frequent, and the people who suffer most are often those forced to leave their homes. Under SPU Announcement 067/2567 on academic service, Sripatum University (SPU) works with public agencies on area-based challenges. In 2025–2026 that work focused on preparing communities for climate-related disasters.

Responding with government in a crisis. When severe flooding hit Songkhla in November 2025, SPU acted through several public channels:

  • Staff and students supported evacuees at the Prince of Songkla University shelter.
  • SPU delivered pressure washers and clothing to Songkhla through the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, received by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary.
  • SPU volunteers took calls at the Thai PBS relief coordination centre. There, the SPU AI Club’s FloodAidSouth app helped route victims’ requests and showed evacuation-centre locations to local responders.
  • The SPU Recovery Heroes programme then trained affected students to restore homes and planned to hand equipment to local agencies for future emergencies.

At the invitation of the Mae Lao Subdistrict Municipal Council in Chiang Rai, Professor Dr. Phaiboon Panyakapo of the School of Engineering presented the team’s damage analysis and seismic retrofit design for the Mae Lao Child Development Centre (24 November 2025). On World Town Planning Day 2025, Asst. Prof. Dr. Warissara Lertpaitoonpan spoke in Ratchaburi on nature-based solutions for climate-resilient cities, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Chitsanu Amprayn spoke in Samut Songkhram on planning innovation for climate adaptation. Student leaders from SPUCATH and the Rotaract Club of SPU completed the DISASTER SURVIVOR 101 field exercise at the Armed Forces Development Command’s disaster relief training centre in Chachoengsao (21 February 2026), practising first aid, smoke and fire response, water survival and emergency evacuation.

Sharing knowledge regionally.

  • UN Conference Centre, Bangkok: International Trade Business students joined the United Nations conference “Climate Change and SDG Synergy”, hosted by UN ESCAP. They heard senior UN officials and experts discuss how climate action and the SDGs reinforce each other, and took part in a Thematic Roundtable organised by UNDESA and ESCAP on sustainable, low-carbon transport, exchanging views with participants from many countries.
  • SDSN Thailand Public Forum 2025: Asst. Prof. Dr. Warissara Lertpaitoonpan, Associate Dean of Engineering, joined the forum at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (18–19 November 2025), where government, academic and private-sector experts reviewed ten years of SDG progress, including climate resilience.
  • ASCN and SUN Thailand Conference: at the 10th SUN Thailand meeting, held with the 10th ASCN Conference at Chulalongkorn University (2–3 February 2026), SPU’s QuakeLink team took second runner-up among more than 100 teams. QuakeLink is a real-time earthquake early-warning system that combines vibration sensors with a mobile app to alert people beyond the epicentre and assess shaking in tall buildings. The team advanced to the ASCN competition at Ritsumeikan University, Japan, and its research paper later won an outstanding paper award at EENET2026.

These activities reflect the Alpha Ready Roadmap’s aim of turning university knowledge into impact for society.

Disasters do not stop at administrative borders, and neither does SPU’s work.

From a subdistrict council in Chiang Rai to the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok, Sripatum University will keep working with government partners so that communities facing climate disasters are better prepared, safer and quicker to recover.
