Rain First, Aquifer Safe: How Sripatum University Practises Sustainable Water Extraction on Campus

No wells, no river intakes. SPU lets the city supply do the heavy lifting, then catches the rain and reuses its own treated water so the campus stays green with a lighter footprint.

Pumps and valves of a building water pumping system at Sripatum UniversityBangkok sits on an aquifer that has been pumped hard for decades, and the ground has sunk because of it. That is why public policy discourages groundwater use wherever mains water reaches. Sripatum University (SPU) builds its water system around that reality. Under the Alpha Ready Roadmap and the university’s Energy and Environment Conservation Policy (Announcement 100/2565), the Office of Buildings and Facilities draws no water from wells, rivers or lakes. The campus runs on metered city mains, and any water SPU takes on site comes from sources that put no strain on the ground beneath it.

Those sources are rain and reuse. Rainwater is captured and held in large storage tanks, and the campus sprinkler system draws on it first. Sprinklers run on timers and soil-moisture sensors, so plants get water only when they need it, and solar-powered pumps serve selected garden zones. Separate pipes keep stormwater out of the wastewater stream. Every building has its own treatment unit, and part of the treated water returns to the grounds to irrigate trees and clean outdoor areas. Drought-tolerant native planting, pressure-reducing valves and sensor taps keep overall demand down.

Behind the scenes, facilities technicians inspect pumps, control panels, pipes and treatment units on a routine schedule, finding leaks early and keeping every part of the system working as designed. The result is a campus that harvests what falls on it, uses water twice where it safely can, and leaves the aquifer alone. It is a low-tech, high-impact model that any urban campus or community in a groundwater-sensitive city can adopt. Next, the university aims to add sub-metering for harvested and reused water, so the benefit can be tracked as clearly as mains use.

Rain first, reuse second, and never at the cost of the ground the city stands on.

At Sripatum University, sustainable water extraction means taking only what the land can spare: rain first, reuse second, and never at the cost of the ground the city stands on.

Facilities landscape team planting and caring for shrubs in a green bed beside a Sripatum University buildingกรุงเทพฯ ตั้งอยู่บนชั้นน้ำบาดาลที่ถูกสูบใช้มายาวนานจนแผ่นดินทรุด ภาครัฐจึงควบคุมการใช้น้ำบาดาลในพื้นที่ที่มีน้ำประปาเข้าถึง มหาวิทยาลัยศรีปทุม (SPU) ออกแบบระบบน้ำโดยยึดหลักนี้เป็นจุดตั้งต้น
