Every Drop Counted: How Sripatum University Tracks Its Total Water Consumption Across Campus

Water can only be saved if it is measured first. SPU meters every cubic metre of mains water it uses, and those numbers drive its water-saving plans year after year.

Water-system control box with an electronic timer at Sripatum UniversityClean water in Bangkok arrives through a city-wide treatment and supply network that costs energy and resources to run. That is why Sripatum University (SPU) treats measurement as the first step of water stewardship. All the water used on campus is treated mains water from the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority. The university uses no desalinated water, and it does not draw water from rivers, lakes or aquifers. Under the university’s Energy and Environment Conservation Policy (Announcement 100/2565), the Office of Buildings and Facilities is responsible for the whole system, from incoming supply pipes and pumps to storage tanks and drinking-water stations.

Throughout the 2025/26 academic year, the Office recorded metered consumption and reviewed it zone by zone across different areas of the campus, including department offices, classroom areas, canteens and shops, toilets, and the trees and lawns that keep SPU green, as well as the free drinking-water production system that serves students and staff. This record turns water from an invisible utility into data people can act on. It shows where demand is high, flags unusual use that may point to a leak, and tells the university whether its measures are working. Those measures include lower water pressure in buildings, motion-sensor taps, sprinklers on timers, and reuse of treated water for irrigation.

This record turns water from an invisible utility into data people can act on.

Measurement also connects campus operations to SDG 6 targets on water efficiency and to SPU’s Alpha Ready Roadmap, where each year’s figure becomes the baseline for the next round of savings. Next, SPU plans to add building-level metering so that savings can be traced to specific buildings, and to share the data in campaigns that encourage everyone on campus to use water wisely.

At Sripatum University, saving water starts with knowing exactly how much is used. By measuring all of it and acting on what the data shows, SPU makes every drop count, for the campus and for the city it shares its water with.
