Measuring What Matters: How SPU Tracks Students’ Sustainability Literacy to Shape Better SDG Learning

Can a first-year student tell which everyday actions really move the world toward the Sustainable Development Goals? At Sripatum University, an SDG literacy check turns that question into data, and the data into better teaching.

First-year students in the Future Skills course gather for a briefing before their FUTURIUM learning visit

Students try an interactive energy exhibit together at FUTURIUMSripatum University (SPU) treats education for sustainable development as a promise to every student. That promise needs evidence. Through its General Education course USC12067 “Future Skills”, SPU gives first-year students across all schools an SDG literacy assessment on the university’s Learning Management System (LMS). Rather than testing definitions, the scenario-based items ask students to connect real-world actions to the right goal: open online learning for quality education, clean and inclusive urban mobility, low-chemical smart farming, youth air-quality analytics, reusable-cup incentives for responsible consumption, and multi-stakeholder “smart-town” partnerships.

Results feed a Business Intelligence (BI) dashboard that shows how well students handled each item. Course teams use these signals to see where understanding is thin and respond with targeted micro-lessons and case-based discussion. Live sessions, in which lecturers move among students to discuss answers, turn the assessment into a learning moment rather than a one-off quiz. The approach sits within SPU’s quality-assurance cycle, where the Teaching and Learning Support and Development Center reviews performance data and advises faculty on improving teaching. It also aligns with the university mission to embed the SDGs in institutional practice under the Alpha Ready Roadmap.

The result is a common language of sustainability across the first-year class, and a feedback loop that helps lecturers teach the global goals more deeply each semester.

Faculty-level work points the same way: SPU logistics researchers have shown that participatory, pre- and post-tested SDG activities raise student understanding. This good practice can be scaled across disciplines.

At SPU, sustainability literacy is something the university measures, learns from and keeps improving, so that every graduate leaves ready to act for a fairer, greener future.

Students examine an exhibit hands-on during the Future Skills field visitมหาวิทยาลัยศรีปทุมวัดความรู้ความเข้าใจด้านความยั่งยืนของนักศึกษาผ่านแบบประเมิน SDG Literacy ในรายวิชาศึกษาทั่วไป และนำผลไปปรับการเรียนการสอนอย่างเป็นระบบ

USC12067 “Future Skills”

Alpha Ready Roadmap
