Reporting period: 1 August 2025 – 31 July 2026
One page, one year, every SDG 9 measure: SPU’s public account of how its research reaches industry, becomes new ventures and strengthens the infrastructure people rely on.

Sripatum University (SPU) reports its progress on SDG 9 openly every year. Innovation only counts when industry and the public can see what it changed. This report covers the 2025/26 academic year. It follows the four things Times Higher Education measures under SDG 9: research, intellectual property, spin-offs, and research with industry.
Under the Alpha Ready Roadmap, the strategy “Research for Industry & Learner Excellence” asks every faculty to produce research and innovation that solves real industry problems and feeds back into teaching. The Research Promotion Centre, the Faculties of Engineering, Information Technology and Entrepreneurship, and SPU Chonburi campus share that aim. SPU acts as a co-creation platform with business, and as a solution partner for Thailand’s digital, manufacturing and service industries.
Research on industry, innovation and infrastructure
- A national stage for applied research: SPUCON2025 (September 2025), SPU’s annual national and international conference, focused on research and innovation for the AI economy.
- Engineering research industry can use: Engineering lecturers and students presented work at EECON-48, IE NETWORK 2026 (May 2026) and ICIEA 2026 (April 2026). Topics included 3D concrete printing stability, IoT monitoring of air-handling units, Industry 5.0 productivity, and a spare-parts inventory model built with Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) data.
- Resilient infrastructure: On 14 July 2026, the Faculty of Engineering and the Thai BIM Association (TBIM) hosted a Thailand–China research workshop with four Chinese building-research and design institutes. The partners agreed a joint research agenda on a construction-standards database, resilient buildings and climate-responsive infrastructure. Engineers also assessed how to strengthen a child-development centre in Mae Lao, Chiang Rai, against earthquakes (November 2025).
Intellectual property and technology transfer
- From invention to licence: On 16 February 2026, SPU and CU Innovation Hub trained researchers in commercialising intellectual property and negotiating licences. This helps campus inventions reach the market under fair terms.
Spin-offs, start-ups and incubation
- A verified spin-off register: Each year the Research Promotion Centre reviews companies built on SPU intellectual property. A company counts only if it is still active and at least three years old.
- From lab to launch: TIE Smart Solutions grew out of SPU engineering research. It builds an AIoT platform that cuts energy use in buildings and factories. In 2025/26 it won first prize at the Lab to Launch pitch at Thailand Talent Summit 2025 (December 2025), secured investment from InnoSpace Thailand (March 2026), and its TIE-CON platform won a national first prize for manufacturing and service software (July 2026).
- An incubator for new founders: The Faculty of Entrepreneurship, recognised by the National Innovation Agency as an innovator-building centre, incubates student and alumni ventures. With Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore, it ran the Co-Create Sustainability Hack (10–13 September 2025) for mixed Thai–Singaporean start-up teams. At TECH IDEA 2026 (22 July 2026), IT students pitched digital products to judges from NTT DATA, MFEC, TQM Alpha and Durian Corp. An SPU BIM Club team won the SYNTEC ConTech Hackathon (October 2025).
Research and innovation with industry
- Contract R&D: For Unitech Associates, Faculty of Engineering researchers reverse-engineered a sludge-suction truck and built an engineering database to guide its redesign (June 2026). This lowers trial-and-error costs for a public-sanitation vehicle maker. Engineers also helped a food-supplement and cosmetics maker prepare for ISO 22000 and HACCP audits.
- Real problems from utilities: The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) set real system-control and asset-management problems for engineering co-op projects, with joint research planned (February 2026).
- Partners for the next industrial base: SPU signed MOUs with True Corporation for digital and AI talent (17 July 2026), and with Digitech One and SMS Solution to bring Digital Twin and BIM into engineering courses (17 June 2026). It also signed with the Thai BIM Association (June 2026) and with Nisso Corporation, Japan, for bilingual engineers (January 2026). SPU Chonburi deepened ties with the Federation of Thai Industries (February 2026). The Research Promotion Centre met the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand and the Engineering Institute of Thailand on joint research and workforce development (July 2026).
- Upskilling industry: In the Eastern Economic Corridor, SPU Chonburi ran a ministry-funded Industry 5.0 leadership programme for factory supervisors. Trainees built productivity projects from their own plants (closing 22 July 2026). SPU also ran BOI STEM++ training in AI and automation (25–26 July 2026), an ISO 9001:2026 and IATF 16949 seminar with TMIC and NECTEC (22 November 2025), and the 4th BIM Contest with the Engineering Institute of Thailand, where students modelled buildings and estimated their carbon footprint (22–23 July 2026).
- Digital infrastructure on campus: The Student Care Management System (SCMS) links students, parents, lecturers and managers through one digital platform, so support reaches each learner early.
Each year SPU also reports its spin-offs, industry research income and academic staff numbers to Times Higher Education, so its role in innovation can be compared. Next year SPU aims to:
- publish a public register of its spin-offs and the research behind them
- record and share patents and petty patents that grow out of SPU research
- grow industry-funded research through the Alpha Ready research collaboration platform
From lab to launch: research that industry can use.
At Sripatum University, reporting on SDG 9 is a promise kept in public. Each year we show how our research reaches industry, becomes new companies, and helps build infrastructure that is smarter, cleaner and more resilient.
