Removing Economic Barriers: SPU Scholarships and Cross-Border Degrees Open Global Education to Students from Lower-Income Countries

Tuition waivers, a degree delivered in Nepal, and free student support in Bangkok give learners with limited means a real route to an international qualification.

Participants wearing traditional scarves greet each other at SPU 5th International Friendship DayFor a family in Nepal, Myanmar, Lao PDR, Cambodia or Bhutan, all countries the World Bank classifies as lower-middle income, tuition is only part of the cost of studying abroad. Travel, housing and the first months in a new country can put a degree out of reach. Sripatum University (SPU) treats these as connected barriers. It backs its policy of admitting students regardless of origin or nationality with practical schemes that cut what an international degree actually costs.

The SPU International College (SPUIC) runs the Global Intelligence Scholarships. They are open only to non-Thai applicants and offer full or half tuition waivers on its international bachelor’s programmes. Calls, interview lists and recipient announcements are published openly on the SPUIC website. For students who cannot leave home, SPU’s Office of Foreign Education Management delivers international programmes with partner colleges in Nepal, so graduates earn an SPU degree without paying to relocate. Recruitment and advice partners in Myanmar, Lao PDR, Cambodia and Bhutan bring these routes to families who might not otherwise hear of them.

Students who arrive in Bangkok are met at the airport and guided through orientation and visa procedures by the Office of International Relations. They have free access to the university infirmary and psychologist consultations, bridge English courses and links to part-time work. Campus life helps them belong. At the International Food Market 2025, students and guests in their national dress shared food from their home countries, students ran their own food stalls, and a Burmese dessert shop joined partners in handing out free food and drinks. At the 5th International Friendship Day, students from across Asia met through cultural exchange and a student forum. The result is equitable access in practice: students from lower-income countries can enter, settle and keep studying without financial shocks ending their degree early. This work reflects the “Alpha Global Experience” strand of SPU’s Excellence Development Plan 2026–2030.

At SPU, a student’s country of birth should not decide whether a degree is affordable.

The university will keep widening its regional partnerships and making scholarship information easier to find for applicants from developing countries.

Students buy food from a student-run stall at SPU International Food Market
