Every Drop Counted Twice: How Sripatum University Measures Water Reuse Across Campus

Rainwater harvesting and treated wastewater reuse keep SPU’s green campus watered. Recording each reused volume makes every saving visible and shows where to reuse more.

Pumps and valves of the water system operated by the Office of Buildings and Facilities at Sripatum UniversityWater reuse only becomes a lasting habit when it can be measured. At Sripatum University (SPU), the Office of Buildings and Facilities runs campus water as one system. It meters mains water for the whole university and tracks reused water alongside it. This approach applies the university’s water reuse and water-saving measures. It also supports the Alpha Ready Roadmap’s aim of an efficient, low-impact campus.

Two reuse streams feed the campus grounds. Rainwater is collected and held in large storage tanks. Wastewater from campus restrooms is treated, then reused for tree irrigation and for cleaning outdoor areas, so it never needs to be drinking quality. Timer-controlled sprinklers draw on harvested rainwater first and water plants only when needed. Facilities staff record the reused volumes and inspect pumps, tanks and pipework on a routine maintenance cycle. The university’s energy and environment committee oversees the work.

Water reuse only becomes a lasting habit when it can be measured.

The records turn reuse into evidence. They show how much irrigation and cleaning demand SPU shifts away from the city supply. They also confirm that the reuse systems keep running as designed, and they point to where reuse can grow. Next, SPU plans to add building-level metering and to extend reuse to more green areas. It will also share its approach with students, so that responsible water use becomes part of campus life.

At SPU, water reuse is measured, recorded and improved year on year. Each reused drop eases pressure on the city’s water supply, and each record helps make the next step a better one.

Electronic timer used to schedule campus sprinkler irrigation at Sripatum Universityการนำน้ำกลับมาใช้จะยั่งยืนได้ก็ต่อเมื่อวัดผลได้ มหาวิทยาลัยศรีปทุมจึงติดตามน้ำที่นำกลับมาใช้ควบคู่กับการตรวจวัดน้ำประปาทั้งมหาวิทยาลัย

Alpha Ready Roadmap
