Shade, lawns and gardens in the middle of Bangkok, with every planting choice made to save water.
A green campus in a hot, dense city usually means a heavy demand for water. Sripatum University (SPU) has chosen a different path. Under its Energy and Environment Conservation Policy (Announcement 100/2565) and the Alpha Ready Roadmap, the Office of Buildings and Facilities treats every lawn, shrub bed and shade tree as part of the university’s water system. Landscapes are planned, planted and maintained so that they stay green while drawing as little as possible from the city supply.

The work is visible across the Bang Khen campus:
- Plant choice: Grounds teams favour hardy, drought-tolerant and native species, such as clumping dracaena beside teaching buildings and shade trees along walkways, because these plants need little water once established.
- Irrigation: Irrigation lines run along planter beds to deliver water straight to the roots. Automatic sprinklers on timers water each area on a set schedule instead of relying on hoses.
- Artificial turf: On the futsal court and along roadside strips, where heat and evaporation are highest, artificial turf removes the need for irrigation altogether.
- Water reuse: Harvested rainwater and treated water are reused to water trees, so drinking-quality mains water is kept for people.
- Year-round care: Gardeners trim hedges and care for the lawns and the gardens around the campus pond throughout the year, which keeps plants healthy without wasting water.
The outcome is a cooler, shadier campus where students gather, walk and relax under the trees, with lower demand on the mains supply. It is also a living lesson in water stewardship: every day, students see that a green city space and efficient water use can go together. Next, SPU aims to extend water reuse for irrigation and to keep a clearer record of its campus planting.
Every tree, hedge and lawn is planted with water in mind.
At Sripatum University, every tree, hedge and lawn is planted with water in mind, so that the campus can stay green for the long term while using less water.
