Shared Care Starts at Work: SPU’s Paternity and Parental Support Policy Helps Fathers Step Up

When fathers have the time and flexibility to care for their children, mothers can stay in their careers. At Sripatum University, that balance is built into how staff work.

A male and a female SPU staff member working side by side at a workshop tableCaring for a new child too often falls on women alone, and it can quietly push mothers out of work. Sripatum University (SPU) addresses this through a university-wide parental support policy. Female staff receive 98 days of maternity leave, and male staff may take leave to care for their children and support their families. The university’s Staff Equality Policy requires every staff benefit to be applied without discrimination by gender or personal status.

Leave is only part of the picture. Office of Human Resources guidelines let academic and support staff work online or in hybrid mode where their duties allow. A father can handle a clinic visit or a sleepless week without stepping back from his job. In March 2026 the university moved theory courses to hybrid mode under national energy-saving measures, and the Office of Online Education trained lecturers to teach this way. For parents who need care on campus, SPU runs a free childcare space close to classrooms and offices, open to all staff.

Together, these measures shift childcare from a “mother’s problem” to a shared family role, so women can stay and grow in academic and professional life. The Office of Human Resources reviewed the provisions in academic year 2025 through the university’s quality assurance cycle. On 31 July 2026 the University Council strengthened that foundation with a new Code of Ethics Regulation. It requires leaders to manage people fairly, bars unfair discrimination by any staff member, and keeps existing staff policies in force under the watch of an Ethics Protection Committee. This reflects the people-centred culture in SPU’s Alpha Ready Roadmap.

At SPU, being a good father and a committed colleague are not competing goals.

By making space for fathers to care, the university keeps the door open for mothers to lead.

Male and female Sripatum University staff measuring their waistlines together during a staff wellbeing workshopมหาวิทยาลัยศรีปทุม (SPU) ทำให้การเลี้ยงดูบุตรเป็นหน้าที่ร่วมกันของพ่อและแม่ ผ่านสิทธิการลา การทำงานแบบยืดหยุ่น และพื้นที่เลี้ยงดูบุตรภายในมหาวิทยาลัย

Alpha Ready Roadmap
