From Coastlines to Classrooms: SPU Builds Local Climate Literacy for Mitigation, Adaptation and Early Warning

Sripatum University takes climate learning to communities, schools and factories, so people can read the risks and act before disaster strikes.

Sripatum University (SPU) treats climate education as a public service, not a campus-only subject. Faculties and student clubs run programmes and campaigns that explain climate risks, show practical ways to cut greenhouse gas emissions, and help communities adapt and prepare.

On World Town Planning Day 2025, the School of Engineering spoke at a provincial seminar in Ratchaburi on nature-based solutions that help cities withstand climate change. Together with the Institute of Industrial Energy, SPU also trained industrial engineers to use AI to cut energy waste. On the Samut Songkhram coast, engineering staff showed residents and pupils how to turn mussel-shell waste into building blocks. Students from General Education, Aviation Business, the Law graduate programme and the Chonburi campus planted mangroves in Samut Prakan, Samut Songkhram and Chonburi, learning how mangroves store carbon and buffer storm surges. Communication Arts students produced climate campaign films for PTT’s “COOL THE EARTH” contest. The SPU GreenTech Gen Z Challenge invited high-school and vocational students to design AI solutions to climate and ecosystem problems.

When the climate shifts, knowledge is the first line of defence.

When severe floods hit southern Thailand, the SPU AI CLUB built FloodAidSouth, an open platform that maps evacuation points, safe routes and urgent needs, while staff and students volunteered at Thai PBS’s coordination centre. Beyond helping affected families, the project became a live lesson in climate risk. It showed students and the wider public how climate-driven extreme rainfall turns into real impacts on homes and livelihoods. It also showed how timely, shared information supports early warning, reduces losses and helps communities adapt to more frequent disasters. All of this work builds the “Sustainability & Civic Engagement” skills set out in SPU’s Alpha Ready Roadmap, and SPU will keep widening it with local partners.

At SPU, climate action starts with shared knowledge, carried from the university into the places where people live and work.
