Less Plastic, More Purpose: Sripatum University Turns Its Plastic Minimisation Policy into Campus and Community Action

From biodegradable packaging at student markets to upcycling workshops with local communities, Sripatum University (SPU) is changing everyday habits around sustainable consumption through its plastic minimisation policy.

Gloved hands pressing a mould into melted plastic bottle caps to make an eco keychainSripatum University (SPU) treats plastic minimisation as a university-wide responsibility. Under Clause 4 of its Announcement on Sustainable Resource Procurement and Waste Management, every faculty and office is expected to reduce plastic use and to choose reusable or naturally biodegradable materials. Each unit also encourages students and staff to cut plastic from their daily routines. The Office of Building and Facilities leads the work and reviews progress each year through the university’s quality assurance cycle.

During 2025–2026, the policy moved from paper into practice. At the 13th SPUBUS Market Fair, student vendors served food and drinks in biodegradable packaging and sold products made from recycled materials, while SPU International College celebrated Loy Krathong with krathongs made from natural, biodegradable materials. At SPU Chonburi, lecturers ran upcycling workshops with Chonburi City Municipality and Klong Tamru Municipality, where older adults, young people and women learned to sort plastic and turn bottle caps into eco keychains that can earn an income.

Students carried the message further. A cross-programme team won first place in the national “Plastic is Hero” short-video contest, Business Administration students were named third runner-up in the Rewastec Circular Challenge 2025 on recycled-plastic products, and Film students won three awards for environmental short dramas at the Asia Environmental and Waste Management Expo.

At Sripatum University, cutting plastic is a habit everyone shares.

The result is a culture of waste minimisation and waste prevention that reaches beyond the campus. Students build the Environmental Awareness and SDGs Literacy skills set out in SPU’s Alpha Ready Roadmap 2026–2030, and communities learn to treat plastic waste as a resource for recycling and new livelihoods. SPU will keep expanding reusable options on campus and reporting progress openly.

At Sripatum University, cutting plastic is a habit everyone shares. It grows from clear policy, practical action and partnerships that help the campus and its communities consume more responsibly.
