Less Disposable, More Reusable: SPU’s Policy for Minimising Single-Use Items Drives Sustainable Consumption Across Campus

Each coffee cup, carrier bag or takeaway box kept out of the bin begins with a decision made before purchase. Sripatum University (SPU) builds that decision into university policy and into everyday campus life.

Sripatum University (SPU) treats waste prevention as a question of consumption, not only of disposal. Its Announcement on Sustainable Resource Procurement and Waste Management (9 September 2023) sets out a dedicated commitment to reduce consumable and disposable materials. It asks staff and students to cut single-use items, favour reusable and biodegradable alternatives, and use campus facilities designed to reduce disposable consumption. The policy also covers plastic reduction, ethical procurement and recycling, so waste minimisation is considered at the purchasing stage instead of after the waste appears.

The University Book Center runs a long-standing “Say No To Plastic Bags” campaign: every Wednesday and Friday it gives out no plastic bags of any kind and asks customers to bring their own cloth bags. Waste separation points and the SPU Waste Bank give the campus community a practical way to keep materials in use.

Students carry the message further. The College of Logistics and Supply Chain created “Next Station Zero Waste”, a board game in which players plan waste sorting for a zero-waste community. Communication Arts students won national awards for environmental short plays themed “a good environment starts with us”. At the “Sripatum Songsuk Su Chumchon #2” community fair, a waste-sorting game and a workshop that turned leftover materials into keychains brought the same habits to local residents.

The result is a campus culture where reuse is the expected choice. Less material reaches municipal waste streams, and students graduate with sustainable consumption habits they can take into work and family life. The initiative supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals on responsible consumption and production, climate action and partnerships, and it reflects SPU’s Alpha Ready Roadmap commitment to a well-managed, sustainable campus. As a good practice, SPU links one clear policy to everyday campus routines, and it will continue to widen reusable options at events and in services.

Every cloth bag brought to the counter and every item kept out of the bin is a small, measurable step toward a circular, low-waste campus.

At SPU, minimising single-use items is a shared habit backed by university policy.
