At Sripatum University (SPU), the shortest route between two classes is meant to be a walk. The campus is planned around pedestrians. Motorcycles and non-essential vehicles stay outside the inner academic zone, and cars are directed to parking buildings at the campus edge. This approach follows SPU’s Energy and Environmental Conservation Policy. It reduces traffic, noise and emissions in the spaces where people learn and meet. On a typical day, and even more during large events, the roads and plazas at the heart of campus fill with people on foot, not cars.

The Office of Buildings and Facilities turns this plan into everyday infrastructure. Tree-lined walkways link the main buildings. Clearly marked red-and-white zebra crossings give pedestrians priority where paths meet service roads. Stainless bollards keep vehicles off the footpaths, and a new covered walkway by the Engineering pavilion gives shelter from sun and rain.
Car-free plazas with shaded seating become shared spaces for study and community life, while ramps and accessible pathways support wheelchair users and people with limited mobility. In late 2025 the office surveyed poorly lit paths and installed solar-powered lights, which make night-time walking safer and use clean energy. The university also invites everyone to walk more. It ran a step challenge from November 2025 to January 2026, and from May to July 2026 it ran “Happy Walk Hour @SPU,” with a walking route around Building 11.
The result is a calmer, greener and safer campus where walking is the natural choice. This is good for people’s health and lighter on the climate, in line with sustainable cities and communities and SPU’s Alpha Ready Roadmap. SPU staff and students also take this pedestrian-first thinking into the nearby Bang Bua community, where they have helped create a safer, better-lit walking route. Next, the university plans clearer wayfinding and more shaded links, so that every journey on campus can start on foot.
At SPU, people come before cars.
Every safe step on campus is a step toward a healthier, low-carbon city.
