Sripatum University (SPU) carried out its plan to upgrade existing buildings through academic year 2025, led by the Energy Management Committee and the Office of Building and Facilities. Ageing air-conditioning in Buildings 1, 5 and 9 was replaced with high-efficiency systems, and automatic lighting controls were installed. The upgrades lower electricity use and emissions and make learning and working spaces more comfortable.

From the annual Energy Management Report to inverter air-conditioning, smart lighting and solar lights in everyday campus spaces. As a designated controlled building under Thailand’s Energy Conservation Promotion Act, SPU prepares an Energy Management Report every year and submits it to the Ministry of Energy. The report assesses energy-saving potential, sets targets and schedules retrofit measures, in line with the university’s Energy and Environmental Conservation policy.
In 2025–2026, fixed-speed air-conditioners used for over 20 years on the 4th floor of Building 1 were replaced with zoned systems, and the 6th- and 7th-floor classrooms of Building 5 received ceiling-suspended inverter units. Restroom lighting on the 3rd and 4th floors of Building 1 is now controlled by motion sensors, the Building 9 gymnasium lighting was upgraded, standalone solar lights were installed along poorly lit walkways, and the motors, traction machines and controls of passenger lifts in several buildings were renewed.
“The new air-conditioning delivers the same comfort with lower installed capacity.”
Occupancy-based lighting cuts waste in empty rooms. Verified savings feed SPU’s greenhouse gas inventory, supporting long-term reductions in carbon emissions and energy costs. The work supports SDG 7 (Target 7.3) and contributes to SDG 11 and SDG 13. It also reflects the SMART – Operation-Ready dimension of SPU’s Alpha Ready Roadmap toward an Adaptive Smart University.
A survey of Food Centre 2 found that its 20-year-old air-conditioning and ventilation blowers were damaged. The findings now guide its replacement with modern, energy-efficient equipment, and the Energy Management Committee will continue to review the plan every year.

Adaptive Smart University
