Building-level wastewater treatment, grease traps, separate drainage and careful handling of hazardous waste ensure that what leaves SPU’s campus does not harm the water downstream.
Every drain on a university campus eventually connects to someone else’s water. Sripatum University (SPU) treats this as a shared responsibility. Under its Energy and Environment Conservation Policy (Announcement No. 100/2565) and its Sustainable Resource and Waste Management Policy, the Office of Facilities runs a set of processes that keep polluted water out of Bangkok’s public drainage and canals, both in daily operation and when something goes wrong.
Protection starts at the source:
- Wastewater treatment: every campus building has its own treatment unit, which uses filtration, aeration and biological treatment. Water quality is checked before treated water is released to public drains.
- Grease traps: canteens use grease traps so that cooking oil and food waste do not clog or contaminate the sewers.
- Separate drainage: separate pipes for rainwater and wastewater stop runoff from mixing with sewage.
- Hazardous and chemical waste: this waste is segregated and stored safely, then sent for proper disposal in coordination with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, so it never enters the drains.
- Accidents and incidents: staff follow an accident-reporting procedure that records the event, puts corrective action in place and feeds the lessons back into prevention.
- Compliance records: wastewater-system operation reports are kept as part of the university’s compliance with local health and sanitation authorities.
The result is cleaner water leaving the campus, lower risk to public health, and less pressure on the urban canals and river ecosystems downstream. The work reflects SPU’s mission, set out in the Alpha Ready Roadmap, to align institutional practice with the Sustainable Development Goals. The university will keep strengthening these processes by improving readiness for unexpected incidents and tracking water quality more closely.
