No untreated wastewater leaves SPU. A building-by-building treatment process keeps Bangkok’s waterways cleaner, and gives some of that water a second life on campus.

A university campus uses water all day, in canteens, restrooms, laboratories and offices, and all of it has to go somewhere. At Sripatum University (SPU), the answer is a treatment process that covers the whole campus. It is run by the Office of Buildings and Facilities under the university’s Energy and Environment Conservation Policy (Announcement 100/2565). It also supports the Alpha Ready Roadmap goal of a campus that operates responsibly in the heart of Bangkok.
The process starts at the source:
- On-site treatment: every building has its own treatment unit.
- Grease traps: wastewater from canteen kitchens passes through grease traps first, so fats and food waste are held back.
- Separate pipelines: rainwater and wastewater run in separate pipes, so storm water does not overload the treatment units.
- Treatment: inside each unit, wastewater is settled, filtered and treated biologically. Aerators supply the oxygen that helps microorganisms break down organic matter.
- Checking before release: the treated water is checked before it enters the public drains, in line with city regulations and engineering and environmental standards.
- Maintenance: staff from the Office of Buildings and Facilities inspect and maintain every unit routinely, so the system keeps working as the campus grows.
The result is a campus that does not pass its wastewater problem downstream. Untreated discharge is kept out of Bangkok’s canals, which protects public health and the urban environment around the university. Part of the treated water is reused to irrigate trees and clean outdoor areas, which reduces demand on the city supply.
Good practice here is simple: treat at source, keep systems separate, check before release, maintain routinely.
Next, SPU plans to make its routine water-quality checks more visible and to share this practical model with students and neighbouring communities.
Clean water and sanitation start with what a campus sends back to its city. At Sripatum University, every building treats its own wastewater, so the water leaving our campus is cared for as carefully as the water coming in.
