SDG 14 Progress Report 2025/26: How Sripatum University Keeps Pollution Out of the Water, Restores Mangrove Coasts and Brings Ocean Learning to Its Communities

One page, one year, every SDG 14 measure. This is SPU’s public account of how it treats the water it releases, cuts the plastic that ends up at sea, and works with coastal communities to protect marine life.

Reporting period: 1 August 2025 – 31 July 2026

SPU Faculty of Engineering meeting Samut Songkhram provincial officials around a conference table on coastal mussel-shell waste

Aviation Business students planting mangrove seedlings in the mudflat in Samut SongkhramSripatum University (SPU) is a city university, but what flows from its drains and bins reaches the Chao Phraya and the Gulf of Thailand. It also works with coastal communities in Samut Songkhram, Samut Prakan and Chonburi. SPU reports its SDG 14 progress openly every year. This report covers the 2025/26 academic year and follows the areas Times Higher Education measures under SDG 14:

  • education for healthy fresh-water and marine ecosystems
  • conservation events and responsible aquatic food
  • water-sensitive waste handling
  • care for shared aquatic ecosystems

Under the Alpha Ready Roadmap, the Office of Building and Facilities, the Faculty of Engineering, the SPU Chonburi campus and faculties across Bangkhen share this work.

Keeping pollution out of the water

  • Treated before it leaves: Every campus building has its own wastewater treatment unit, and canteens use grease traps. Aeration and routine testing keep treated water within national discharge standards before it reaches city drains. The university keeps a Wastewater Treatment System Operation Report as part of its environmental sanitation records.
  • Hazardous waste kept apart: Chemical, laboratory and electronic waste is separated at source and sent to certified disposal centres, so it cannot enter the water system. This follows the SPU Announcement on Sustainable Resource Procurement and Waste Management (9 September 2023).
  • Less plastic heading for the sea: Clause 4 of the same policy asks every unit to cut plastic and choose reusable or biodegradable materials. Free RO water refill stations reduce single-use bottles. Student vendors at the SPUBUS Market Fair used biodegradable packaging. SPU Chonburi taught local residents to upcycle bottle caps.
  • Responsible aquatic food: Clause 1 of the policy commits the university to ethically sourced food from producers that meet recognised standards and respect the environment.

Restoring mangrove coasts with communities

  • Planting the nursery of the sea: Students planted mangroves at four Gulf of Thailand sites during the year:
    • Law graduate students at the Khlong Khon Mangrove Conservation Centre, Samut Songkhram (13 September 2025)
    • Aviation Business students in Samut Songkhram (24 January 2026), who also learned how local cockle and oyster farms make a living
    • SPU Chonburi students on World Forestry Day (21 March 2026)
    • General Education students at Laem Fa Pha, Samut Prakan (26 May 2026), as part of course USM11667
  • Culture and conservation together: SPU Chonburi students joined the Khlong Tamru Subdistrict Administrative Organization and a local mangrove conservation group (4 March 2026). The event combined a traditional merit-making ceremony with learning about mangroves as nursery grounds for marine life.
  • Cleaner beaches: Graduate College of Management students collected and sorted waste on Jomtien Beach, Chonburi (June 2026). They also learned how litter harms coastal ecosystems.

Partners for a shared shoreline

  • From shell waste to building blocks: On 5 February 2026, the Faculty of Engineering met the Samut Songkhram Governor and provincial agencies. The meeting looked at mussel-shell waste piling up along the coast. Four days later, the faculty, the Kai Fa Group (a volunteer citizens’ group) and local residents ran a workshop that pressed shells into building blocks. The work eases pressure on an erosion-prone shoreline and opens new income for coastal households.
  • Watersheds upstream: Student leaders worked with the Royal Thai Army to build check dams and replant forest in Lop Buri (January 2026). This helps rivers carry cleaner, steadier water downstream.

Learning about the ocean

  • Meet the sea within you: Communication Arts students staged “The Sea Within You”, an interactive exhibition (14–22 November 2025). A short quiz matched each visitor with a sea creature to spark interest in marine conservation.
  • Ideas that protect marine life: Business students in Team BLUEWAVES turn discarded “ghost” fishing nets into fashion. The project won two awards at ZEBRA PITCH 2025 (31 August 2025) and an honourable mention at SUN Thailand’s 10th conference (2–3 February 2026).
  • Design, business and law:
    • Architecture student thesis “Modular Coral Dreamscape” (January 2026) proposed an undersea research centre that helps coral reefs recover.
    • Entrepreneurship students learned about ornamental fish care and aquaculture from Kasetsart University’s Faculty of Fisheries (March 2026).
    • Law students joined a World Environment Day forum on cross-border toxic pollution in the Kok and Mekong rivers (June 2026).
    • Cruise management students studied water and waste management and the Green Marina concept at Ocean Marina, Pattaya (late 2025).
  • Youth with solutions: At the SPU GreenTech Gen Z Challenge 2026 (12 March 2026), school and vocational students designed AI ideas for the environment, including marine conservation.

Technology for watching the sea

  • One Marine Chart: Dr. Surachai Thongkaew of the Faculty of Information Technology designed the system architecture and data layers for One Marine Chart (presented August 2025). This national map combines real-time maritime data from many government agencies.

Reporting in public

SPU released its annual SPU SDGs Report 2024 as a free public PDF in November 2025. SDG 14 stories also appear on the SPU SDGs website under Goal 14.

Next year, SPU aims to:

  • publish discharge-water test summaries regularly
  • turn coastal activities into long-term partnerships with community groups
  • widen ocean learning for students and the public

“What leaves our campus today reaches the sea tomorrow.”

At Sripatum University, reporting on SDG 14 is a promise kept in public. Each year we show how we keep our water clean, use less plastic, and stand with coastal communities to protect the life that depends on the sea.
