One Stage, Many Views: SPU Opens a Neutral Platform for Political Dialogue on Thailand’s Education Future

Ahead of the 2026 general election, four political parties, young people, teachers and civil society met at Sripatum University to debate education policy and law openly, respectfully and on equal terms.

Political party representatives and moderators share one stage at the Election 69 forum at Sripatum University

A healthy democracy needs places where people who disagree can still talk. Sripatum University (SPU) sees this as part of its public role: to give competing political views a neutral, safe and evidence-based space on its campus. That commitment rests on SPU’s academic freedom policy and on its Alpha Ready Reinventing Roadmap 2026–2030, which casts the university as a co-creation platform shared with industry and society.

A participant stands to ask a question from the floor during the Election 69 forum at Sripatum UniversityOn 30 January 2026, SPU’s Faculty of Law co-hosted the “Election 69” forum, titled “Prescribing Thai Education: Policies We Like, Laws That Fit”, at Building 11 on the Bangkok campus. The partners were the Equitable Education Fund (EEF), the Children and Youth Council of Thailand, the Kru Kho Sorn teachers’ network, Thai PBS and the Toolmorrow network. Assistant Professor Dr Wirat Lertpaitoonpan, Vice President of SPU, opened the forum. He described it as common ground where politics, academia and the public could build shared understanding of education law and policy.

Representatives from the Thai Kao Mai, People’s, Pheu Thai and Democrat parties joined the policy session. A Thai PBS producer and a secondary-school student moderated together. The Secretary-General of the Thailand Consumer Council and the EEF’s research director set out the evidence. Parents, teachers, youth and student representatives then raised concerns on free education, equity, school safety and graduate employability. Participants from government, politics, academia and the public put questions directly to party representatives and examined the National Education Act together. The forum showed peaceful, inclusive and participatory decision-making in action, and supported informed civic participation before the election.

A healthy democracy needs places where people who disagree can still talk.

By convening rivals on one stage without taking sides, SPU reaffirms its role as an intellectual commons where frank, respectful debate helps turn “laws on paper” into a fairer future for every learner. The university will keep opening its doors to dialogue that strengthens trust in democratic institutions.
