Listening Beyond the Campus: How SPU Identifies and Engages Local Stakeholders

From city hall to the riverside community, Sripatum University turns stakeholder voices into decisions that shape its programmes and partnerships.

SPU Faculty of Engineering meets Samut Songkhram provincial agencies on coastal mussel-shell waste

Industry experts and SPU aviation business faculty review final examinations togetherSripatum University (SPU) treats the people around its campuses as partners, not bystanders. Its Policy on Academic Freedom and Engagement with Local Stakeholders (Announcement No. 063/2566) commits the University to identify community leaders, local government, businesses and civil society in a structured way. It then brings them in through consultation, dialogue and joint projects. A complementary announcement on community-engaged academic services asks faculties to co-design work with local agencies and communities. The policy is reviewed every year through SPU’s quality assurance system.

The procedures show up in everyday decisions. Every degree programme is designed and revised with employers, alumni and professional bodies. In aviation and hospitality, assessment committees that include industry experts review final examinations each term, so assessments match professional standards. Faculties also plan new courses with industry partners, as the aviation safety programme did with a drone and robotics centre. Beyond the classroom, SPU hosts the Bang Khen police oversight committee’s community-safety meetings. Its engineers work with the Samut Songkhram provincial administration on coastal waste, and its students are invited to serve as judges at national competitions. Graduate employers are surveyed every year, and a stakeholder listening system routes their feedback into improvement.

SPU treats the people around its campuses as partners, not bystanders.

The result is a university whose programmes respond to real local needs and whose partners trust that their views count. This approach reflects the inclusive, accountable institutions envisioned by SDG 16. It also supports SPU’s Alpha Ready strategy of a university that grows with its community.

SPU will keep widening the circle of voices it listens to, because strong communities and a strong university are built together.
