Fair, Safe and Sustainably Sourced: SPU’s Ethical Sourcing Policy Brings Responsibility to Every Plate and Purchase

From canteen ingredients to campus supplies, Sripatum University asks one question before it buys: was this made responsibly?

Every purchase a university makes sends a signal down the supply chain. Sripatum University (SPU) made that signal deliberate when it issued its Announcement on Sustainable Resource Procurement and Waste Management on 9 September 2023. The first section of that announcement sets out SPU’s ethical sourcing policy for food and supplies. Food and materials should come from producers that meet recognised standards and respect the environment, with preference for quality, eco-friendly products certified to international standards. In its public statement, SPU makes clear that this commitment reaches the people behind each product: fair labour, safe workplaces, and no forced or child labour anywhere in the supply chain.

The policy is led by the Office of Building and Facilities, and it shapes daily life on campus. SPU’s dining halls run on licensed premises, and the food vendors who serve students and staff work under university rules. Vendors complete food-hygiene training and regular health checks in line with national sanitary regulations. They are also encouraged to use local ingredients, sort waste and move away from single-use plastics. The same approach guides the purchase of office materials and facility supplies, where sustainability now sits alongside cost and quality in supplier decisions. Integrity underpins it all. The SPU Code of Ethics Regulation 2026 requires every executive and staff member to act honestly, use university resources wisely and avoid actions that harm the environment.

Ethical sourcing is a working standard for what we serve, what we buy and who we buy from.

This is responsible consumption and production in practice: sustainable procurement that protects workers, supports local producers and lowers the footprint of campus operations. It also reflects the “Transparent Governance for Smart Organization” pillar of SPU’s Alpha Ready Roadmap, which builds SDG targets into how the university is run. SPU reviews the policy through its annual quality assurance cycle, and the next step is to build supplier screening and green procurement criteria more firmly into vendor selection and contracts.

At SPU, ethical sourcing is not a slogan on a wall. It is a working standard for what we serve, what we buy and who we buy from, so that fairness and sustainability are built into every choice the university makes.
