The Office of Buildings and Grounds oversees the development and maintenance of wide, well-lit pathways, separated from vehicle areas, to promote walking as a primary mode of transportation within the campus. SPU’s layout minimizes vehicle interference by designating parking areas for motorcycles and cars away from pedestrian zones, encouraging eco-friendly travel behaviors.
This pedestrian-first approach reflects SPU’s commitment to SDG 11.4.6, promoting “Pedestrian Priority on Campus” to support sustainable practices that create a safer, more welcoming environment for the university community. By prioritizing pedestrian access, SPU fosters a sustainable commuting culture, reduces campus traffic, and minimizes carbon emissions. Additionally, these measures align with several other SDGs, enhancing both the environmental and social well-being of the campus:
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being. By encouraging walking and minimizing vehicle use, SPU contributes to a healthier lifestyle for students and staff, reducing pollution and promoting physical activity. This safe and clean environment also supports mental and physical well-being.
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. SPU’s sustainable campus infrastructure serves as a model of effective urban design, with dedicated pedestrian pathways and minimal vehicle zones representing innovative approaches to building a “green” campus that prioritizes sustainability and safety.
SDG 13: Climate Action. SPU’s focus on pedestrian zones and reduced vehicle access helps decrease carbon emissions on campus, supporting the global goal to mitigate climate change by promoting sustainable transportation choices and reducing pollution.
Through these initiatives, SPU exemplifies how pedestrian priority can transform campus environments to become safer, healthier, and more sustainable. By fostering a walkable campus culture and promoting eco-friendly travel, SPU’s commitment to sustainability contributes significantly to a greener, more inclusive university experience for everyone.
