From Know-How to Livelihood: SPU’s Free Start-Up Support Helps Local Communities Build Sustainable Businesses

Sripatum University is bringing AI, digital marketing and business-model thinking to neighbours and community enterprises, and preparing a new generation of founders through pitching camps, hackathons and real shops.

A mentor coaching a group of students on their business idea at the Business Talent Boot CampA small business can be a family’s most reliable route out of financial insecurity, but only if its owner has the skills, confidence and networks to make it last. Sripatum University (SPU) treats this as part of its public mission. Throughout 2025–26, staff from several faculties gave their time and expertise free of charge to help local residents start and strengthen businesses that are financially viable and good for their communities. This work fits SPU’s Alpha Ready Roadmap, which positions the university as a partner in its local economy.

In Bang Bua, the community beside the Bangkhen campus, mentors from Business Administration, Information Technology, Digital Media and the School of Entrepreneurship coached residents in AI-assisted content, smartphone product photography and selling online. The Office of Online Education Management ran a practical AI workshop for women entrepreneurs, and in June 2026 the Graduate College of Management worked on site with the Baan Suay Mai Ngam community enterprise in Chonburi, then guided a Business Model Canvas workshop on value, customers and strategy. SPU also builds the next generation of local founders. In the Business Talent Boot Camp, pre-university students pitched business ideas to mentors. SPU teams competed in the Hug Mae Hackathon 2026, whose theme is the community economy, and a School of Accountancy team won an award for a Thai silk product concept. At the SPUBUS Market Fair, business students ran more than 50 real shops.

The results are practical: residents gain digital skills they can turn into income, a community enterprise has a clearer plan for growth, and young people learn to turn ideas into businesses that serve their communities. A partnership with the Thai SME Confederation adds mentors and networks that small firms can draw on. Next, SPU plans to bring its mentoring, legal, accounting and digital support into one year-round service that any local founder can reach.

A university’s knowledge is most valuable when it helps people build their own futures.

SPU believes that a university’s knowledge is most valuable when it helps people build their own futures. By keeping start-up support free, practical and close to home, SPU is helping local entrepreneurs turn ideas into lasting livelihoods.
