One Campus, One Standard: SPU Extends Its Disposable-Item Policy to Every Outsourced Service

From food vendors to housekeeping teams, everyone who serves the SPU community now works to the same rules on single-use items, plastic reduction and waste segregation.

Under its Resource Procurement and Sustainable Waste Management Policy, Sripatum University commits to minimising waste, reducing plastic use across all sectors of the university and replacing disposable items with reusable or biodegradable alternatives. Much of the campus’s day-to-day service is delivered by external partners, so SPU holds its outsourced services to the same standards.

The Office of Buildings and Facilities carries these requirements into contracted operations. Canteen and food-court vendors operate under university regulations and are guided to cut single-use plastic, separate waste and adopt eco-friendly packaging. Housekeeping and cleaning teams sort waste at source and route recyclables to the SPU Waste Bank, which is open to students, staff and service partners alike. Collection follows the Chatuchak District sanitation framework, while procurement criteria favour suppliers that reduce packaging and support reuse.

Responsible consumption only works when it reaches everyone on campus, not just students and staff.

The outcome is a single standard across the campus value chain. Less single-use waste reaches landfill, more material returns to the recycling loop, and outsourced workers become active partners in a circular campus. This good practice supports SPU’s Alpha Ready Roadmap goal of a sustainable, well-managed university, and it reflects the global agenda on responsible consumption and production. As a next step, SPU will further strengthen the environmental clauses in its service agreements.

At SPU, the commitment to sustainability covers everyone who works on campus, not only university staff. Every vendor, cleaner and service partner is part of the same commitment to a low-waste campus.
