Removing Poverty as a Barrier to a Degree: How SPU Turns Financial Aid into Real Access

From student loans managed end to end to full scholarships for those in greatest need, Sripatum University makes sure a family’s income does not decide a student’s future.

On-campus Krungthai Bank account service for 2569 student-loan borrowers at Sripatum University, June 2026For many Thai families, tuition and daily living costs decide whether a young person can stay in university. Sripatum University (SPU) responds through its Scholarship Office, which runs a coordinated system of need-based financial aid for students in degree programmes. The backbone is the Thailand Student Loan Fund (SLF), a government, low-interest, means-tested scheme. SPU handles every step for borrowers: eligibility screening, the DSL online application, document checks, contracts, and the transfer of tuition and living allowances. Students in the greatest hardship, including those under the care of the Rajaprajanugroh Foundation under Royal Patronage and recipients of the Southern Border Provinces Higher Education scholarship, receive full tuition waivers for the whole degree. These are complemented by disability education subsidies and tuition instalment plans.

The system is reviewed with partners every year. On 4–5 September 2025, Student Loan Fund representatives visited SPU to meet borrowers, hear their concerns and review their progress, and worked with the Scholarship Office to streamline document checks so that approvals come faster. The Rajaprajanugroh Foundation’s social welfare committee also visited SPU’s Royal scholarship students to follow their wellbeing and studies. On 15–16 June 2026, SPU brought Krungthai Bank onto campus so that new borrowers could open the account required for loan and living-allowance transfers using only their national ID card. This saved them a costly trip and removed a common cause of delay.

The result is aid that arrives when students need it, and fewer students forced to pause their studies for financial reasons. Recipients are tracked against Registrar FTE records, giving the university a clear view of who is supported. This work advances the global goals of ending poverty and reducing inequality in education, and reflects SPU’s Excellence Development Plan 2026–2030 (Alpha Ready Roadmap). Next, SPU will extend early guidance so that more low-income applicants know their entitlements before they enrol.

At SPU, financial aid is not a favour but a pathway.

At SPU, financial aid is not a favour but a pathway. By managing aid end to end, working closely with national partners and acting early, the university keeps the door to higher education open for the students who need it most.

2569–2573 (Alpha Ready Roadmap)
