From Folklore to Cultural Capital: SPU Graphic Design Students Selected Among Top 12 Teams in National ‘Local Legends’ Project

SPU School of Digital Media empowers students to redesign the historic ‘Laplae Local Legend’, transforming regional heritage into tangible creative capital for sustainable impact.

When local folklore meets modern youth creativity, ancient myths transition from fading memories into vibrant cultural and economic assets. Sripatum University (SPU) proudly celebrates the outstanding achievement of School of Digital Media students, Ms. Thitikarn Ploykaewphol and Ms. Jaruwan Siriboonkhun, from the Graphic Design program. Their exceptional design and graphic skills secured their place as 1 of 12 creative teams nationwide selected for the ‘Local Legends: From Legends to Creative Cultural Capital’ project, organized by the Department of Cultural Promotion in collaboration with Silpakorn University.

The team redefined the historic ‘Laplae Local Legend’ into tangible, contemporary creative cultural capital. Engaging students in this national initiative aligns directly with SDG 4: Quality Education under SDG 4.3 Lifelong learning measures, specifically SDG 4.3.3 Vocational training events (lifelong learning), by fostering professional development through practical experience outside traditional classrooms.

Furthermore, translating traditional narratives and indigenous wisdom into modern digital design actively preserves cultural heritage. This directly advances SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities under SDG 11.2 Support of arts and heritage, particularly SDG 11.2.6 Record and preserve cultural heritage, by reviving local folklore and creating new social value.

This collaboration between Sripatum University, the Department of Cultural Promotion, and Silpakorn University also demonstrates SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals under SDG 17.2 Relationships to support the goals, specifically SDG 17.2.1 Relationships with regional NGOs and government for SDG policy, fostering multi-stakeholder partnerships between higher education and government entities to advance the creative economy.

Sripatum University remains steadfast in empowering students to excel in the creative industries, driving meaningful cultural and economic impact for society.
