SPU Divests from Fossil Fuels: A Bold Step Toward Clean Energy and Climate Action
Sripatum University (SPU) has reinforced its commitment to global sustainability by officially implementing a divestment policy, redirecting institutional investments away from fossil fuel industries and toward renewable, clean energy. This strategic move directly aligns with SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action), with a particular emphasis on sub-goal 7.2.6 – the adoption of a divestment policy as part of a sustainable energy strategy.
Under the supervision of SPU’s Office of Buildings and Facilities, the university’s shift includes reducing investments in coal, oil, and other fossil fuel sectors, while increasing support for solar and wind energy initiatives. Internally, SPU has upgraded its infrastructure by installing solar-powered lighting in selected buildings, deploying automated climate control systems, and replacing traditional bulbs with energy-saving LED lights. These actions reflect SPU’s transition from carbon-intensive operations toward a more energy-efficient and environmentally responsible institution—supporting SDG 13.2.2 (percentage of energy from low-carbon sources) and SDG 12.2.1 (ethical sourcing and responsible use).
SPU’s sustainability model extends beyond finance and facilities. The Office of Buildings and Facilities has promoted integrated resource management, such as expanding green spaces, enhancing waste recycling systems, and improving water treatment and reuse. These ecosystem-centered actions illustrate SDG 6.3.1 (wastewater treatment), SDG 11.4.4 (green infrastructure), and SDG 12.3.2 (campus waste recycling percentage). The university’s commitment is documented in its annual sustainability report, which publicly tracks progress on emissions reduction and energy transitions, in line with SDG 17.3.1 and SDG 13.3.1.
Moreover, SPU recognizes the importance of community engagement and education. By initiating awareness campaigns and training programs, the university fosters a participatory culture of energy conservation among students and staff—championing SDG 4.3.5 (lifelong learning policies), SDG 17.4.1 (SDG education integration), and SDG 16.2.5 (governance transparency through reporting).
Through a powerful blend of divestment, infrastructure reform, and educational empowerment, SPU emerges as a sustainability frontrunner in Thailand’s higher education sector.
