Sharing Water Know-How Beyond Campus: SPU Opens Free Learning on Sustainable Water Management for the Community

From a water-loss innovation shown at SPU Giving Day to skills for the people who run Bangkok’s water supply, Sripatum University turns engineering knowledge into water-wise practice that anyone can learn, free of charge.

Visitors explore the Faculty of Engineering exhibition booths at SPU Giving Day 2025Clean water reaches homes only when every pipe, joint and pump works as it should, and small leaks quietly waste a scarce resource. Sripatum University (SPU) believes that good water management should not stay inside lecture halls. Under SPU Announcement 067/2567 on academic service to society, the university funds non-revenue projects so that communities, partners and the public can take part at no cost, and every faculty is encouraged to bring its expertise to the people around it.

On 31 October 2025, at SPU Giving Day, themed “Power of Giving for Sustainable Future”, the Faculty of Engineering opened an exhibition of its work for society. Students and lecturers stood at their booths and walked visitors through “BIM Family for Water Treatment System”. It is a set of pipe-joint models designed with Building Information Modeling that makes water-treatment plant supply lines more accurate and cuts water loss, and the team explained how communities can use the same approach to manage their water better. SPU’s knowledge also reaches the water sector itself: a lecturer from the College of Logistics and Supply Chain co-designed competency courses for staff of the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority, the agency that supplies water to Bangkok, and the Faculty of Engineering publishes a free online guide that shows how civil engineering can turn flood-prone districts into resilient, livable cities. SPU people also learn water stewardship hands-on. From 28 to 30 January 2026, student leaders worked with the Army Civil Affairs Department in Lop Buri to build check dams and restore a headwater forest. At a World Environment Day forum, law students joined a national debate on cross-border pollution in the Kok and Mekong rivers and the rights of riverside communities.

Good water management starts with shared knowledge.

Together, these activities show sustainable water management in practice: less water lost, stronger skills among water-service staff, and a public that better understands water security and conservation. They support SPU’s Alpha Ready Reinventing Roadmap, which positions the university as a platform for co-creation between the university, industry and society and builds students’ environmental awareness and SDG literacy. The Office of Buildings and Facilities also shares practical water-saving tips with neighbouring communities, such as fixing leaks, choosing low-water plants and tracking use. Next, SPU plans to turn exhibitions like this into hands-on community workshops.

Good water management starts with shared knowledge. By opening its engineering expertise to the community at no cost, Sripatum University helps every visitor, partner and neighbour save water, protect supply systems and build a more water-secure city.

The completed check dam with volunteers by the streamมหาวิทยาลัยศรีปทุม (SPU) เชื่อว่าความรู้เรื่องการจัดการน้ำที่ดีไม่ควรอยู่แค่ในห้องเรียน จึงเปิดโอกาสให้ชุมชนและผู้สนใจได้เรียนรู้จากผลงานจริงของนักศึกษาและอาจารย์ โดยไม่มีค่าใช้จ่าย
