Beyond Tuition: How SPU Removes the Everyday Financial Barriers Facing Low-Income Students

Free wellness care, safer and cheaper housing, and flexible fee payment, all coordinated so that a family’s income does not decide who graduates.

For many students from low-income households, tuition is not what forces them to leave university. It is everything around it: rent, a health problem they cannot afford to treat, a loan that arrives late. Sripatum University (SPU) treats these as institutional responsibilities. Under its student equity policy and the Alpha Ready Roadmap, support is organised as one connected system rather than a set of separate offices.

The Scholarship Office guides students through the Student Loan Fund and need-based scholarships, including full-tuition awards for Rajaprajanugroh Foundation and Southern Border Provinces scholars. The SCMS portal and SPU Care let students track aid and ask for help at any time.

Support reaches students where they live and study. The Wellness Counseling Center and campus medical room are free all year. At Freshy Day on 10 July 2026, Student Affairs and the Rainbow Sky Association of Thailand gave new students free health screening and confidential counseling in a stigma-free space. The White Dormitory network works with nearby landlords on safety standards and negotiates rent discounts, split deposits and free internet for students with limited means. A Dorm Finder platform and affordable options near BTS stations cut both rent and commuting costs.

When money is tight at the start of term, the Finance Office lets students pay fees in two instalments, which helps working students and those still waiting for their loans. The result is a safety net that keeps students enrolled and focused on learning instead of on survival. It reflects the global commitment to end poverty by widening equality of opportunity. In the coming year, SPU plans to make these services easier to find through a single online entry point for students in financial need.

At SPU, talent and effort, not household income, should decide who crosses the graduation stage.

Every service in this system exists to keep that promise.
