Free On-Campus Childcare Space Helps SPU Student-Mothers Stay in Class

No student should have to choose between caring for a newborn and finishing a degree. At Sripatum University, a dedicated family-friendly room means they don’t have to.

Glass-fronted entrance and shelving of the family-friendly room at SPUFor many students who become parents, especially new mothers, the hardest part of returning to university is not the coursework. It is finding someone to look after a young child during a two-hour lecture. Sripatum University (SPU) has answered that need by allocating a designated family-friendly space on campus that student-parents can use free of charge while they attend classes.

The room is managed by the University’s central administration in partnership with Student Affairs. It offers seating, a play and quiet corner for young children, and a private lactation area for breastfeeding mothers. It is designed for short stays that fit around timetabled sessions. Rules of use and service hours are displayed at the room and shared online, so students know how to check in and use the space safely and considerately.

The impact is practical and immediate. Removing short-term childcare as a barrier helps recent mothers keep pace with their studies, lowers the risk of interrupted enrolment, and supports women’s progression to graduation. The initiative complements SPU’s wider wellbeing and student-support services and aligns with the Alpha Ready Roadmap’s focus on a student-centred, inclusive campus. A matching provision for staff and faculty extends the same support across the university community.

At SPU, gender equality is made real in everyday spaces.

By making sure motherhood does not mean leaving the classroom, the University keeps the path to a degree open for every woman who chooses to pursue it.
