SPU Champions Plastic-Free Future with Campus-Wide Waste Reduction Plan
Sripatum University (SPU) has unveiled a bold action plan aimed at dramatically reducing single-use plastic waste across its campuses. This strategic initiative, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reflects the university’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability, climate action, and marine conservation.
Central to the plan is the reduction of disposable plastics and a campus-wide shift toward biodegradable and reusable alternatives—directly supporting SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). With clear operational changes such as installing plastic recycling bins, engaging external recycling partners, and encouraging students and staff to use their own reusable containers, SPU is institutionalizing responsible consumption under sub-goals like 12.2.1 and 12.2.6.
Further amplifying its sustainability commitment, SPU addresses the climate dimension of plastic waste under SDG 13 (Climate Action). By cutting down on plastic production and disposal, the university helps reduce associated greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with sub-goals such as 13.3.1 and 13.3.2 that emphasize climate awareness and community collaboration.
Notably, the action plan also protects aquatic ecosystems, tackling one of the root causes of ocean plastic pollution. In alignment with SDG 14 (Life Below Water), particularly sub-goal 14.4.2, the university’s efforts contribute to the preservation of marine biodiversity by reducing waste runoff and plastic leakage into water systems.
Beyond infrastructure and operations, SPU’s campaign fosters a culture of sustainability. Awareness campaigns and behavioral nudges for students, faculty, and staff ensure that environmental consciousness becomes an integral part of daily life on campus.
SPU’s action plan is more than an environmental response—it is a declaration of leadership in sustainable education. มหาวิทยาลัยศรีปทุม (SPU) เดินหน้าสู่การเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยสีเขียว ด้วยการเปิดตัว “แผนปฏิบัติการลดการใช้พลาสติกแบบใช้ครั้งเดียว” ที่ครอบคลุมทั่วทั้งมหาวิทยาลัย แผนนี้สอดคล้องกับเป้าหมายการพัฒนาที่ยั่งยืน (SDGs) ของสหประชาชาติ และสะท้อนพันธกิจของมหาวิทยาลัยในการปกป้องสิ่งแวดล้อม รับมือการเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพภูมิอากาศ และอนุรักษ์ระบบนิเวศทางทะเล
หัวใจของแผนคือการลดพลาสติกแบบใช้ครั้งเดียวและส่งเสริมวัสดุทางเลือกที่ย่อยสลายได้หรือสามารถใช้ซ้ำ เช่น การรณรงค์ให้นักศึกษาและบุคลากรพกภาชนะส่วนตัว และติดตั้งถังแยกขยะพลาสติกทั่วทั้งมหาวิทยาลัย แผนนี้สะท้อนเป้าหมาย SDG 12 (การบริโภคและการผลิตที่ยั่งยืน) โดยเฉพาะข้อย่อย 12.2.1 และ 12.2.6
นอกจากนี้ แผนดังกล่าวยังสนับสนุนเป้าหมายที่ 13 (การรับมือกับการเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพภูมิอากาศ) โดยลดการปล่อยก๊าซเรือนกระจกจากกระบวนการผลิตและกำจัดพลาสติก ซึ่งเกี่ยวข้องกับข้อย่อย 13.3.1 และ 13.3.2 ในการสร้างความรู้และความร่วมมือระดับชุมชนด้านสิ่งแวดล้อม
ที่สำคัญ แผนนี้ยังช่วยปกป้องระบบนิเวศทางทะเล โดยลดการรั่วไหลของพลาสติกลงสู่แหล่งน้ำ ซึ่งเป็นภัยคุกคามต่อสิ่งมีชีวิตในทะเลอย่างรุนแรง ตามเป้าหมาย SDG 14 (ชีวิตใต้น้ำ) โดยเฉพาะข้อย่อย 14.4.2
