Dr. Sook Pookayaporn was born on
12 January 1916 at Ban Rim Nam, Khlong Sip, Nong Jork, Pra
Nakorn. He was the fifth child of Mr. Pook and Mrs. Rang Pookayaporn.
When he completed his primary education at Wat Saen Kasem,
he became a novice monk for 30 days. Afterwards, he helped
his parents' trading business until 1932 when he started his
own business in the floating market. He later began trading
in husked rice and eventually bought his own rice de-husking
factory in 1957. It took him 15 years, from 1932 to 1957,
to achieve success financially.
In 1963, Dr. Sook Pookayaporn started
the Songserm Satabat construction company in Pratu Nam.
Dr.Sook worked and studied independently and believed that
everything in his life was a learning experience. Those
close to him always heard him say, "Education is life
and life is action."
In 1967, the government allowed the private sector to become
involved in vocational education. Dr. Sook founded several
vocational education schools which have expanded to become
Thai Administration and Commerce School, Thai Burapha Business
Administration School, Thai Ayothaya Business Administration
School, Thai Women's Commerce School, Thai Suriya School
of Technology, and Rungroj Suksa School. In 1970, the government
allowed the private sector to involve in higher education.
Dr.Sook Pookayaporn founded Sripatum College which was given
its name by Her Royal Highness the Princess Mother who presided
over the opening ceremony on February 14, 1970.
Dr. Sook Pookayaporn was dedicated to
the college and searched for qualified and experienced professionals
to manage and teach at the college. The college was given
the university status by the Ministry of University Affairs
in 1987, a source of great pride to the founder. In addition,
he requested permission to establish the Cholburi campus
in the same year to benefit students who lived far away
from the main campus in Bangkok.
Dr.Sook Pookayaporn held the
following positions :
- Member of Parliament for Bangkok
- Chairman of Bangkhen Youth Center
- National Father's Day Chairman
- Committee member and advisor to the Private Vocational
Schools of Thailand Society
- President of Rice De-husking Factories Society
- Advisor to the Interior Minister
- Advisor to the Special Scouts Organization of Thailand
- President of the Student Soldiers Society of Thailand
- Chairman of the Thai Suriya Schools of Technology Group
His position at Sripatum University was Chairman of the
University Council and founder. He received the following
awards :
- 1st class scout's medal
- Red cross medal
Dr.Sook Pookayaporn passed away on the 17th of July 1992
at the age of 76.
Dr.Sook Pookayaporn taught those who worked with him to
hold to the principles of being "creative , knowledgeable,
fast, and neat."
Today, Sripatum University has become one of the top-tier,
private, higher-learning institutions in Thailand. Sripatum
University excels in every area and has produced quality
human resources for the nation in accordance with Dr.Sook
Pookayaporn's vision.
